Denoon Sampson Ndlovu Inc celebrated Mandela Day by participating in two different initiatives. On Friday the 15th of July 2016, we attended Mandela Day at Oliver’s House, on the outskirts of Deveyton. Oliver’s House, is a nonprofit organisation. Their focus is on early development, education, skills development and community development.
The elderly were treated to lunch and received gift packs including blankets and non-perishable food. They erupted into song and dance expressing joy and gratitude. We then got the opportunity to spend time and play with the children. We helped hand lunch out to quite literally- the best behaved kids we’ve ever seen. They greeted us with smiles and little-handed high fives.
Our next project was devoted to helping elderly members of our community. There is an increasing need to care for the elderly who either have no families or who have been abandoned or neglected by their families. We often can become consumed by our busy lives and forget some of the most vulnerable and isolated people in our communities.
On Monday the 18th of July 2016, our team, packed and delivered 67 toiletry bags to Queen Alexander Retirement Home. The facility provides a home for 56 frail elderly residents, some of which have Alzheimer’s disease. The residents received us with open arms, some inviting us to see their rooms and others sharing valuable stories and experiences with us! It was heartwarming to see their excitement in receiving essential toiletries most of us take for granted.
